Many industrial and commercial activities result in air pollution. The air in our towns and cities can be heavily polluted with a wide variety of gases and particulate material that can all impact on human health. In order to combat this growing problem, the Government has laid down air quality limits for many of the more common pollutants.
In conjunction with partner organisations, NPL Analytical offers a comprehensive service targeted at the sampling and analysis of ambient air. The service is based around a new generation of diffusion tubes which offer excellent detection limits and, due to their sensitivity to many compounds, can be exposed for just a few hours to several weeks. The diffusion tubes currently available are Ozone, formaldehyde, NO, NO2, SO2, ammonia and BTEX. The tubes can also be used to determine personal exposure and for indoor studies.
In addition to the analysis of gaseous pollutants, NPL Analytical can sample ambient air for particulate loading using the reliable R&P Partisol 2000 & 2025 technologies. The collected samples can be weighed to provide an atmospheric dust concentration in mg/m3 or digested prior to subsequent analysis for lead, for example, or for any other relevant heavy metal.
